Abe Pierce operated a small nightclub located at 506 W. Belmont Street, in the heart of the segregated Belmont-DeVilliers neighborhood. In the early 1960s he moved to a two-story building across the street at 515 W. Belmont but kept the name Abe’s 506 Club. He also purchased the Savoy Ballroom on DeVilliers Street, which served as the USO club for African-American servicemembers during World War II. The two buildings were linked at the back, forming an L-shaped complex that included a dance floor and lounge (the “Star Dust Room”) as well as a package liquor store in the old Savoy storefront.

The Savoy and 506 Club hosted countless blues and soul music acts during and after segregation, but the club closed in 1981. Pierce died in 1987, and the buildings were razed in 2000.
