This sprawling oak tree provided shade to generations of Pensacolians. It was slated for removal in 1976 with the final Interstate 110 extension in downtown Pensacola. Despite a months-long campaign led by landscaper Barry Bonifay, the tree was felled on July 7, 1977. The failure to protect Alcaniz Oak led to greater efforts to protect heritage trees through local ordinances.
