The old Escambia County Courthouse, with its imposing Victorian Romanesque architectural style, was located on Palafox at Chase Street. Construction was completed in 1885, and an armory annex was added ten years later.

In 1908, during a strike by the local streetcar operators union, state militiamen sent to protect strikebreakers camped at the armory.

After a land swap with the federal government, both structures were razed in 1938 to make way for a new U.S. post office and courthouse (now the Winston E. Arnow Federal Building). Following an act of Congress, the clock from the old courthouse was donated to the Pensacola Historical Society. It now tells time in front of the slightly newer Escambia County Courthouse (now Artel Gallery) at Palafox and Government Streets.
