Alexander Stoddart was a Scottish native who founded the New York Underwriters Agency. He took an interest in Pensacola and ended up buying around 200 acres of land in the “New City” area (now East Hill).

He built a winter home called Fairnie Hill Place, where he experimented with fruit trees and ornamental plants, made significant road improvements, and even drilled for oil. In 1883 he started a 20-acre Alderney dairy and stock farm which operated into the 1890s.

Stoddart died in 1906, and much of his land was redeveloped as the Lakeview neighborhood. Fairnie Hill was sold to Dr. J.L. Ingram in 1918 and resold in 1925 for a possible apartment complex. A Colonial-style home built on the site in 1940 was named “Fairnie Hall” in its honor.
